Oh, I didn't know that about Germany and Switzerland! Thanks for that information. I am all for the conservation efforts, and I think small towns can live sustainably if they are a tight-knit community. I do not especially like stocking of water bodies and anyway it's usually larger businesses who profit from this. I like that you're thoughtful in your approach. Cheers!

Valid point! In fact, other countries such as Germany and Switzerland have banned catch and release and made it illegal to even fish with the intent to release. Conservationists have valid arguments as well though. In San Diego we have very few bodies of fresh water and they are all small. If all the fishermen here killed their catch we would not have any fish left.

For the most part though I think the risk of infection to a wild fish is low. Stocked trout however do not have the natural immunities of wild trout and have a high risk of infection. Because of this I don't know of any lakes that have stocked trout and allow you to release them, it's catch and keep only.

I appreciate the spirit behind catch and release, but as a former vet nurse, I have to say the best thing to do if one catches a fish, is to eat it. Any animal with a hook in its mouth is at high risk for infection (unless you bring the fish to a vet, put it on antibiotics and then hope it survives long enough to be released). Dying of a systemic infection has to be one of the most painful ways to die. I lead some naturalist programs and am shocked by how many people, kids, even, are able to catch fish with their hands. Try this and follow the non-hook procedures you mentioned and it will be great.

And while fishing I also say non-lead sinkers are a good idea, in one study over 50 percent of loons who died did so from lead poisoning.
